" The work of Schulim Krimper holds a distinctive place within the field of mid-twentieth century Australian furniture design. Creating modern handcrafted timber furniture, he was a skilled craftsman whose European training and knowledge of international traditions and contemporary design developments informed his work. Krimper’s legacy has relevance to the design aesthetics and approaches evident in Bayside’s history of mid-century architecture."
I had the great pleasure of visiting this exhibition and for anyone who's interested in design, furniture, the craft of woodwork, it really is a must see. There are 41 items of furniture, from sideboards, cupboards, chairs, desks, tables, frames, boxes, and many others, and they show a lightness and elegance. These hand crafted modern styles from the 1940s to 1960's have lasted beyond these years.

"Schulim Krimper was born in Sereth on the eastern border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Romania) in 1893. Orphaned as a child, he was apprenticed to the town cabinet-maker and later travelled and worked throughout Europe, expanding his skills and experience.
In the 1920s he moved to Berlin, and in 1939, he and his wife Elsbeth fled Nazi Europe, settling in Melbourne where he set up a workshop in High Street, St Kilda.
Favouring Australian timbers but also using many imported woods, Krimper became known as the city’s premier supplier of custom-made furniture. "
