Who is Yayoi Kusama?

A few highlights of NGV Exhibition 2025

· Exhibition news,Events

As I’ve discovered she is an one of the world’s most important and recognised artists.

The NGV exhibition has her work across the artist's close to nine decades of work from a diverse range of media. While I’d seen a few of works (the dots are everywhere) I had no idea of the breath and consistency of her work. She is an art icon, being named in 2016 Time magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential People.

Let's start with the Dancing Pumpkin, an ambitious 5 meters tall bronze artwork. Painted yellow and black polka dots with eleven tentacle like legs, some grounded and some suspended in mid air. A re-occuring image in her work as commentators have noted represents myriad of ideas, from the sun and moon to the vibrating atoms and cells in all living things, making links to her fascination with lifecycle, the universe and intercontentedness.
